Road markings and signage

Road markings and signage convey important information and requirements to road users regarding road characteristics and/or conditions, that may affect them in their journey.

Both road markings and signage when used appropriately make a vital contribution to safety and traffic management, and can help to reduce negative effects on the environment.

Road markings and traffic signs are prescribed by ‘The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002’. National guidance on use is provided by the Department for Transport (DfT) within the ‘Traffic Signs Manuals’ in addition to Cornwall Council’s own signing policies that are defined in our Direction Signing document..
